Planque: a slice of Paris in East London

The Story

Planque is a wine drinkers' clubhouse featuring a stunning dining area, a wine store, a private dining room, and two large cellars where members can store their wine. The wine list emphasises low intervention wines, many of which are aged on-site, showcasing a dedication to quality and authenticity.

Planque was launched in 2021 by Jonathan Alphandery, a wine collector and restaurateur, and chef Seb Myers. Myers' vision of combining innovative cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere has made Planque a wonderful addition to London’s dining scene.

The Vibe

Situated under two former railway arches in Haggerston, East London, Planque is a marvel of thoughtful design. The space boasts cobalt blue walls, a diverse array of modernist furniture, and a surprising abundance of natural light, making it both striking and cozy. The open-plan layout, complemented by polished concrete floors and exposed brickwork, lends a fresh, modern vibe. The restaurant features various intimate spaces, including a members-only lounge, a bar, and a dining area that seats 60, fostering a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Sitting at the kitchen bar is highly recommended for a close-up view of the open kitchen, allowing diners to immerse themselves in the lively ambiance. Service is friendly and attentive. Personally, I find Planque a perfect setting for a romantic date night.

The Food

Planque's menu is a testament to simplicity and balance, featuring approximately 15 main dishes and starters, along with a few desserts. Each dish focuses on three primary ingredients, harmoniously blending flavours.

Highlights from my visit include the Scallop & Sea Lettuce Tartelettes: tender, juicy fresh scallops paired so wonderfully with a buttery tartelette shell. Mr H truly enjoyed the crunchy fried sardines, served with a robust aioli.

The Comté tarte topped by sprouting broccoli and chervil offered a delightful mix of a buttery crust and sweet, salty notes of cheese. All topped by a delicate and fresh French parsley.

By this point, Mr. H and I agreed that Planque chef Seb is a also a brilliant pastry chef.

A special vegetarian pre-main of broad beans, chard, and aubergine was simple and exquisite. The main courses continued to impress: the grilled John Dory, tender and succulent, was accompanied by Vesuvio tomatoes, crispy samphire, and cream; while the Guinea fowl with aubergines and tapenade was juicy and flavorful. Sides of buttery pink fir potatoes and a fresh leaf salad perfectly complemented the mains.

Dessert was a standout: the St Jude Ice Cream with Meringue & Bread Caramel: the rich and buttery cheese beautifully bursts in your mouth, blended seamlessly with the sweet caramel and smoky meringue crunch - an irresistible sweet and salty combination.

Dining at Planque is a culinary delight—a place we will return to again and again.
